W.I.P. Female Marine Biker Legs

I got a reminder that I haven't sculpted bike riding legs for the female space marines yet.

A bike riding band of powered armored Valkyries does have a definate appeal to it :)

So here's the start to what's probably going to be the last bits I do for these female marines.

I still need to work on sculpting her arms. Might just go ahead and sculpt more feminine scaled arm and hands for them as well to match the new smaller shoulder pads.

Just a quick post showing the stuff that got sent to Jacqualine for casting  last week.

Included in the shipment were:

Female rкомисса́р (aka commissar)
- I decided not to sculpt the weapons since it would unnecessary delay getting the figure cast and I figured you would rather provide your own weapon-load-outs to suit your army anyways.

Female marine scout torso
- for use with the usual scout legs (with modifications to the crotch) and IG arms with the female marine heads from the current sets.

Female marine torso with jump harness
- for use with separate assault posed legs. Jacqualine will be separating the torso of the current assault pose figures from their legs to offer them as separate components.

Female marine helm with opened chin guard

- this is my own helm for my assault squad captain. I plan on doing variants with the face guard fully opened and one with it fully closed once I get the cast back.

Female marine legs

- one kneeling posed and another assault posed legs.

Smaller marine shoulder pads
-One is smaller than the other, but both are smaller than the standard marine pads. I prefer the larger of the tow but I'm going to leave it up to Jacqualine to decide which one she wants to cast up for us.

Next up on my work table are female and male champions of war and female soldiers:

Here are finished pics of my entry for Koridon's "May Challenge" for Cystic Fibrosis awareness from last month.

I had lot of fun painting a figure for a change. It also made me realize that I really need to paint more.

No contest winner, but I'm glad I was able to get it done. I started a new job last month and I was busy flying back and forth between Seattle and San Francisco on business almost every week.

Things are starting to settle down finally, so hopefully I'll be able to get back to sculpting again and posting stuff again soon.

Here's some w.i.p. pics of my entry for the Koridon's "A May Challenge" over at Dakka Dakka to promote awareness of Cystic Fibrosis: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/447166.page

Basically I have until end of May to paint any one infantry type unit from any game, using purple and gold as the main colors with a rose somewhere on the model (the symbol for Cystic Fibrosis is a rose).

The roman numerals on the knee pad is "LXV" for number 65. Children often has problems saying Cystic Fibrosis' so they call it 'sixty five roses' instead for them.

W.I.P. More Female Marine Parts, Mech and a Female Commissar

A quick update on some stuff I'm currently working on.

First up are two more leg options for the female marines; kneeling pose and another assault pose. I'm working on one more assault type legs and torso with chest harness for the upcoming female assault marine set.

I recently had a bout of nostalgia and picked up the Battletech Introductory Boxset, which made me want to try sculpting mechs.

The female commissar is almost done.  I've started working on her weapon options already.

Female Marine Combat Squads are Ready to Go!

It took a long time but the female space marines resin castings are finally ready.

For those fellow gamers out there interested in getting your hands on some of these female marines for your own, Jacqualine47 has graciously offered to help in making them available to us.

Please contact her directly by e-mail: jacqualine47@yahoo.com for further details.

It is thanks to her generous efforts that I can finally offer them to you. Thank you Jacqualine!

Currently the available kit consists of 5 female marines, one of each sculpt as shown in the pic below:

In the Dark Grimness of the Far Future, there is Only War -- and Misogyny, apparently :)
One with torso/arms/legs, two with torso/legs, one separate legs/torso with plain breastplate, and one separate legs/torso with aquila -- plus five different un-helmeted head sculpts and five helmeted head sculpts that include two standard marine helmets, one company champion helmet, one beakie helmet, and one open-face helmet.

Thanks for your patience and continued support. I will be continuing to support this project by completing the assault squad set and sculpting additional figures and parts.

Cheers!

W.I.P. Female Marines: Size Comparison

Here's a size comparison pic of the female marines along with my so-called art-scale/true-scale marines.

Size comparison with the art-scale bodies:

These below are shown with the smaller helmets I sculpted for the female marines; which in my opinion helps with the art-scale look.

Size comparison with an AOBR terminator model.

I'm trying to keep my art-scaled models to fit on the standard bases rather than the larger termie bases. The cork base I use while sculpting has a 25mm diameter.

Female Marine Castings by Jacqualine47

Here's pics showing the first casting of the female space marines by Jacqualine47

Jacqualine is  a garage-workshop resin caster with a lot of experience with 2 piece (and sometimes 3 piece) molds and pressure casting.  She stumbled across my blog, saw the female space marine sculpts and  offered me help in making molds and do castings.

Looking at these pics, I'm so glad I decided to take her up on her offer!

It's amazing what a difference in quality there are between my poor attempts at casting and the wonderful results she achieved with hers.

She said that she will try to take some good progress pictures for us so that I can keep my blog updated :)

I'm very excited to finally see some real progress on this project!

Hopefully in a couple months, I can finally get them to all my friends who have been patiently waiting to add them to their army/collection :)

Further Adventures in Casting

Thursday, December 8, 2011

Another attempt at casting:

This time I managed to get the resin to travel through the mold and out the top.

Lots of air bubbles in this one. But at least I have a miniature figure of sorts :)

The figure with the arms is missing her left hand and all the faces and helms suffer from air bubbles.

So I cut more vents into the mold to let the air escape, with the following result:

It is better than the first cast but there are still too many air bubbles.

I used green stuff on one of the figure to fill in all the holes left by the air bubbles. The air bubbles on the heads are particularly problematic since it disfigures the face. I had to re-sculpt the nose and mouth.

I made several further attempts at casting with similar results. I tried vibration, rotating and talc powder to no avail :(

I think I got too ambitious with getting all the parts in a single mold, resulting in a mold that doesn't allow proper flow of  resin (and air) through it.

I ran out of the mold making material since I wasted a lot of it during these lessons. When my order arrives I'll I'll try making a simpler mold that is more optimized for air flow.

Wish me luck!
